Interviewing can be both frustrating and arduous because throughout the process, you receive little or no feedback except for the obvious: if they want you back, they contact you. If they don\’t, frequently you never hear from them again. But after a first interview the reasons for not being asked back are numerous, and quite frankly, usually the reason is you: lack of experience, poor interviewing skills, inadequate preparation and research, or similar shortcomings. As a result, another candidate generated more excitement.

But sometimes you are the candidate that generates the excitement, and you\’re the one that is invited back for a second or third interview. And though you\’ve reached the final stages of the interviewing process with a specific company and feel sure an offer is imminent, suddenly……nothing.

Sometimes the process has stalled. Occasionally - and stupidly - a company finds the perfect person, but feels they have to interview a specific number of people first, and while they do, they\’re under the impression you\’re waiting happily in the background with your life and emotions on hold until they contact you again.

Other times only a letter in the mail tells you it\’s done. Rarely are candidates told why they didn\’t get the job. Unless you get this far in the process, usually you aren\’t even told that much. Was it something you did? Maybe. But maybe not!

Relax. While you are busy wondering what went wrong or trying to convince yourself it had nothing to do with you…sometimes that\’s the truth! You and that company just weren\’t meant to be, and nothing you might have done - or not done - would have made any difference.

Consider these factors, all of which take place without your knowing:\r

  • A last-minute candidate appeared on the scene who was exactly what they were looking for. Maybe you were almost perfect, but for some reason, the last-minute candidate was just a bit more whatever they were looking for. If you experienced a delay in your interviewing late in the process, odds are very good your position as the top candidate was simply usurped at the last minute.
  • An internal candidate suddenly came into the picture. Though many companies post open positions internally first and go outside only after exhausting internal options, that doesn\’t account for someone changing his mind - especially if it was a person they were targeting for the opening to begin with.
  • The company decided to eliminate the position or put the hiring process on hold for a period of time. Sometimes when a company doesn\’t know in which direction they want to go, they run an ad to \”see what\’s out there\” and then eliminate the position when their water walker fails to submit a resume. On other occasions, the process might be halted as a result of some event that changed the circumstances - and thus changed their decision about interviewing.
  • The company felt you\’d fit in so well, they didn\’t hire you. What? Sometimes a company needs someone not like everyone else to balance out the department. Sometimes a candidate\’s full personality isn\’t really understood until the person has interviewed more than once and with additional people in the company. And yes, that\’s partially why you are asked to interview with more than one person!
  • One of the interviewers that came into the picture later in the process didn\’t like you. Perhaps you reminded them of a former employee that didn\’t work out. Maybe they were threatened by your expertise and skill. In any case, they carried enough weight or had enough of a valid point to get you jettisoned from the process.\r
  • Remember that interviewing is the process by which you find a company that you like, and by which a company hires you because they feel you are the best person for the job. Everything happens for a reason, and if you missed getting a job offer with one company, something better may be just around the corner.

    So concentrate on what you can control and forget about what you can\’t. If you mope around over a missed job offer, worrying about what you did or didn\’t do and wonder why they didn\’t like you or where you messed up - what you are effectively doing is letting your attitude bring about another negative outcome.

    Keep your chin up. Look objectively at whether or not you can pinpoint something you might have done differently, and then learn from it. Otherwise, put it behind you and move forward with a confident and positive outlook!

    1. It\’s Not Who You Know, It\’s Who Knows You! - LinkedIn advises connecting only with those you know and trust. Which is great if you know a lot of people.     Who needs another time-consuming networking tool to stay connected with people you already know? You have a relationship with them and probably keep in touch regularly via other ways and means.

    Don\’t be surprised if you find people you know on LinkedIn, issue an \”invitation to connect\”, then don\’t hear back from them. If you look closely, you may find they set up their profile a long time ago, never did much of anything with it, and aren\’t all that active in LinkedIn anyway (if at all). Not much of a problem then.

    What is a problem is when these same people respond to your invitation with a \”Doesn\’t know\” tag. Get enough of these and LinkedIn will ban you forever. Ouch!

    2. It\’s Not Who You Know, It\’s Who Wants to Know You! - LinkedIn has a defined social hierarchy. Don\’t act surprised. Every society has a \”pecking order\”; this one just happens to be online.

    At the top of the hierarchy is the \”open networkers\”. They call themselves LIONS (for LinkedIn Open Networkers). They typically have hundreds, if not thousands of connections and advertise their openness to connecting with anyone. This does not mean you don\’t have to check their profiles; your \”invitation to connect\” can still be rejected. But it does mean chances are good they\’ll accept thereby making it possible for you to grow your network by connecting to them. The downside is you\’re not likely to have a lot in common with a LION (unless choosing wisely) which could make building ongoing relationships harder.

    At the bottom of the hierarchy are the \”closed networkers\”. These folks accept invitations to connect based on highly-defined known-only-to-themselves criteria. Approaching them is very risky. Even when you know them, worked with them, and possibly are even close personal friends with them, they still might reject your invitation to connect. If you\’re lucky, they\’ll just ignore you. Multiple times. Your feelings might get hurt, but at least you won\’t score any penalty points.

    If you are thinking of adding them to your network, make no assumptions. Test the waters offline before issuing an invitation to connect to be on the safe side.

    In the middle is everyone else. They may or may not know you but, if you can get up the courage to send an invitation to connect, there is a 50/50 chance they\’ll accept if for no other reason than you look like someone they really should know (or at least give the appearance of knowing) or because they actually do know you and have decided to give you that \”virtual seal of social approval\”. Others may accept because they have an agenda of their own to pursue and you look like someone they can safely approach with it sooner or later.

    Then there are the people who send you an invitation to connect with them. Now you get to decide who\’s in and who\’s out. What\’s your standard \”acceptance\” criteria going to be?

    The Winning Interview - Don\’t Answer the Questions?

    You\’re looking for a job, perhaps a change in careers. You\’ve polished up your resume. After writing your resume the next step should be to prepare for the phone interview and then more detailed preparation for the face to face interview. Do you panic or are you prepared to pass the first test? If you get through the phone interview, next you\’ll be called in for the first face to face job interview.

    Was your interview preparation reading and studying the latest and greatest interview book like, \”85 Great answers to 85 Tough Interview questions,\”or something similar? Memorizing possible answers you get from a book because they sound \”good\” to interview questions will not show the real you. You will come across as memorized and stilted. Both things you do not want and both are guaranteed to knock you quickly out of contention.

    There is another more effective approach to consider.

    First, let\’s think about what the employer wants. The employer wants answers to the following general questions. Do you have the skills and ability to do the job and make money for the company? How well will you work with the corporate team-will you be an asset or liability? And finally, will you fit in the corporate culture?

    Which of the following is the best answer to the question, \”How well do you take direction?\” Answer #1 \”I think I take direction well.\” Or Answer #2, \”When I started at XYZ we had a staff meeting every Monday. We were formed in teams for an assigned task and sometime I was the lead other times others were assigned to lead the team. I worked well with everybody. In fact my boss complimented me about this several times and he even made note of it in my last performance review.\”

    If you were the interviewer, I think you would give the candidate who gave answer #2 higher marks than the first answer. Why? Well, the candidate with the second answer was telling a story. A story that not only answered the question by provided other vital information about the candidate. The candidate told the interviewer about their skills that they were business (bottom line) orientated and they worked will within the team concept. All are important questions the employer wants answered.

    It\’s valuable to use a shorthand format in setting up your stories. Using the S.T.A.R. process will produce the best results. S. stands for situation, did you initiate or define the problem or was it identified by someone else. T. stands for what task were you asked to perform. A. means what action did you take, were you a member of a team or did you have others working for you on the Task. R. will be the results. Be specific, you saved, for example $15,000 or completed the task under budget or you accomplished the task sooner than planned.

    How do you do this? Take out a blank sheet of paper and write out personal stories and your experiences that you will use to answer the employer\’s questions. These small stories using the S.T.A.R. method will allow you to take the initiative in the interview and will permit your personality to come through. Don\’t go into a long involved recitation but keep each story to less than 20 seconds and not longer than 45 seconds or so.

    To get a more complete picture concerning the candidate the employer will be looking for abilities and skills in the following areas:

    (1) Bottom line impact: made money, saved money, improved sales, improved quality, improved service;

    (2) Leadership skills;

    (3) Worked with a team, your contribution and results;

    (4) Failure or disappointments on the job and how you overcame them;

    (5) Greatest stress on the job and what did you do to resolve; and

    (6) Any career changes, how did you come to the decision and the results.

    There are surely other areas where you\’ll be questioned but this list of six should get you started drafting your stories. Stories that will highlight your expertise and experience and tell the interviewer something about your approach to your previous jobs, how well you work in a team, and if you would fit into their view of the ideal candidate for the vacancy.

    Many job candidates lose out because they were nervous and tight in the interview, they gave canned answers, or long rambling answers, and they are just not themselves. You on the other hand will come prepared with your \”little stories.\” There is nothing to memorize, so you\’ll come across as relaxed and as close as possible to be natural and \”yourself.\”

    The interview will now be more of a conversation than an interrogation. This is vital because not all interviewers are skilled. They may have a list of pet questions that many times are lacking in helping them discover your competencies that are critical in the effective performance of the job. With your answers in the story format following the S.T.A.R. procedure you\’ll go a long way toward overcoming this deficiency.

    So don\’t come to the interview to answer questions. Use your well thought out \”little stories\” to engage in a conversation with the interviewer that will highlight your abilities and fitness for the job. You\’ll be more comfortable with the interview process, your skills will be properly showcased, and you\’ll be in a better position to get an early job offer.

    Childcare workers employed in before-and after-school programs are expected to help students with their homework, engage them in extra-curricular activities including field trips, learning computers, painting, photography and participating in various sports. Taking the children to school and bringing them home can also be a part of the duties assigned. Similarly, keeping the children healthy and looking after their eating habits is an important responsibility too.

    Self-employment is a good option. Many childcare workers have their own businesses. However, employment is possible as a private household worker, babysitter and family childcare provider in childcare centers. These centers provide pre-school services for children between 3 or 4 years.

    Those in charge of infants are called \’infant nurses\’. \’Nannies\’ work full or part time for a single family. Employment as an Au Pair will take the worker abroad as a nanny. The other employment options are pre-school leaders, pre-school workers, early years care and education workers, nursery assistants, learning support assistants, classroom assistants, play leaders and assistant play leaders.

    There is a demand for child care personnel, creating good job opportunities. People who are qualified and interested in the field get good jobs within no time.
