The Many Benefits Of Exercise During Pregnancy

Exercise during pregnancy has so many great benefits for both your and your new baby. Normally, exercise should be light, especially during your first few weeks of pregnancy while your body adjusts to the changes. Any type of heavy exercise can divert the blood flow from crucial areas, and most women that exercise on a regular basis should tone down their workout regimen during pregnancy.

Swimming, walking, and yoga are two very popular exercise activities that are suitable for pregnant women. There are other forms of exercise such as weight lifting that are acceptable as long as it isn\’t too strenuous. Most specialists recommend exercise during pregnancy at 3 - 4 times a week, unless you have a medical condition that prevents it. If you are ever in doubt, you should consult a physician first.

Below, you\’ll find some of the best reasons as to why you should exercise during pregnancy.

    1. Exercise can help to reduce the length of labor and recovery time. The right exercise routines will also increase stamina that is needed for delivery.

    2. Improved mental health. Exercise can lower stress and improve your emotional health, making it easier for you to get through the new experience of becoming a mother.

    3. Exercise can also help with weight management after the child has been born. A common concern with most mothers is the weight they lose after pregnancy. During pregnancy, exercise can make postpartum weight loss easier.

    4. Exercise is very good for your unborn baby. By keeping your body healthy, you are also looking out for your baby as well.

    5. Exercise can help reduce the side effects of pregnancy. Symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, swelling, and constipation are all common with pregnant women. Studies have shown exercise to reduce the occurrence of these symptoms.

    6. Exercise can also decrease the risk of premature birth. Exercise has been proven to decrease the risk of premature birth by at least 50%.

You should always make sure that you drink plenty of fluids before you exercise, follow a nutritious diet, and avoid over exertion. You should also listen to your body, and if you start feeling sick you should immediately stop and rest.

If you exercise during your pregnancy, you\’ll find it a lot easier to deliver when the time comes. Exercise will help your body strengthen up, which will make it very easy on you when you go into the delivery room. Women who don\’t exercise find it much harder when the time comes to give birth. Exercising during pregnancy is one of the best things you can do for yourself and for your unborn baby. Your baby will reap some of the benefits, which is reason enough to exercise.

Always be safe when you work out and don\’t hesitate to ask a doctor for advice if you have any questions at all. As long as you exercise safe and use good common sense, you\’ll do a world of good by getting some exercise during pregnancy.

You\’re pregnant? Congratulations! By the way, you can find out more about Exercise During Pregnancy as well as what to expect each week of your pregnancy by visiting: http://www.WeeklyPregnancyGuide.com

    Common Pregnancy Questions and Answers

If youre an expectant mother, you have questions. It doesnt matter if this is your first, second or seventh (!!) pregnancies. Many of your questions and concerns can be answered by surfing the web and finding useful sights. Also, your healthcare professional is a great resource for answering questions. However, regardless of how trite and minute your concern may seem, you should never feel as if you are an inconvenience. As a mother and for the well-being of your baby you need answers, and the following is a list of common questions and their answers.

The first concern almost all mothers have is how much weight is healthy for me to gain? A common range is between 25 to 35 pounds. If a mother is underweight she is recommended to gain more where as an overweight mom can birth a healthy baby while gaining even less than 25 pounds. With this in mind, the most important thing for an expecting mother to do is to eat healthy meals at regular intervals. It is also just as important to drink plenty of water. The importance of the nourishment you provide your body through proper nutrition can not be stressed enough.

What about exercise? This too is a frequent question heard by health professionals. Life does not stop as you know it once you become aware of your impending pregnancy. If a woman was active before her pregnancy, it is considered acceptable and healthy to continue an active lifestyle. Of course, each expecting woman should check with her health professional to confirm that maintaining a level of activity is safe. If you are planning on starting a new exercise routine definitely check with your doctor in order to monitor you and your blood pressure. Never push yourself to exhaustion and keep your heart rate at a moderately raised level. Make sure to drink plenty of water and avoid places such as hot tubs where perspiration is limited.

What pregnant woman hasnt wondered about diet restrictions? If a woman is healthy to begin with, there really arent any dietary restrictions. But, that being said, there are a few recommendations all health professionals agree upon. Avoid sushi since it can contain raw meat. Only cooked meat is recommended. Also, do not eat raw eggs and un-pasteurized cheese. Another common suggestion is to limit caffeine. Basically, if a woman is healthy before pregnancy there is no reason for her to drastically change her diet. By keeping the above considerations in mind her diet will be healthy for her and her baby.

If a woman has pregnancy questions, she is normal! Getting these questions answered is part of having a healthy pregnancy. There are many resources available for the expecting woman, which include her doctor, books and of course, the knowledge from the experienced mothers that surround her.

    Pregnant Mothers and Starbucks

Many mothers are addicted to caffeine and cannot handle going without during the nine months of pregnancy. The damage done to the fetus is a very critical issue in this time of development. Occasionally we see pregnant women come into Starbucks and buy a cup of coffee and wonder if we should say something. We do not of course and mind our own business. They are probably well aware of the risks they are causing their future child. Maybe they do not believe the reports or figure one more cup will not hurt. And maybe that one cup itself will not, but day after day we see them there again.

As we move towards a national health care system, we will be responsible for this child as they grow older. We as a nation, you and I as taxpayers, will be footing the bill in the case of special education classes if that child has issues with learning. So much for the Child Left Behind Act. If the baby has any early complications well we may end up paying for that too. If the child grows up and becomes un-trainable, un-teachable or uncontrollable we are the ones who will foot the bill with additional education costs, additional police, jails, prisons and rehabilitation.

If we choose not to mention it and mind our own business, we will pay for it later. If we say something we make an enemy of a stranger. Yet we also see that probably nothing will change in either case and in the end it is up to the mother herself to be responsible and stay out of Starbucks unless she is buying decaffeinated coffee. If you are a pregnant future mom; please do what is right for the future of the nation and your child, it is your responsibility. Think about it.

    Sex During Pregnancy

There is no medical evidence that having sex while pregnant can cause any harm to the baby. The baby is protected from the effects of sexual activity by the cushioning properties of the fluid in the amniotic sac, and the muscles of the uterus. The cervix, or neck of the uterus, is sealed off by a thick mucus plug which helps guard against infection.

There are a few certain circumstances where health care professionals may advise against having sex in pregnancy. These are:

Placenta praevia. This condition, affecting less than one percent of pregnant women, is also known as low lying placenta.

A history of miscarriage. Your doctor may advise abstaining from sexual intercourse during the first trimester, or at times during those first three months where menstruation would have occurred.

A history of premature labour. Doctors may advise caution during the whole pregnancy, or just the later stages, where there has been a previous pre term birth.

Bleeding. Whether during the pregnancy in general or specifically after sex, any bleeding should be reported to a doctor. Depending on the outcome of any examinations or scans, and the frequency of the bleeding, doctors may recommend not having further intercourse.

Sex during pregnancy cannot hasten the onset of labour unless it is time for it to begin anyway. Uterine contractions may be experienced during orgasm but these are not powerful enough to induce labour. When the time for labour to begin is much closer to hand, then nipple stimulation and substances called prostaglandins, which are present in semen, can help to bring it on.

Sensation & Desire for Sex in Pregnancy

Increased blood flow to the pelvic area in pregnancy can lead to a heightened sense of arousal. The genital area can become engorged, but this engorgement is not a potential source of pleasure for every woman during sex. Some find it uncomfortable. Similarly, sexual desire can be increased or decreased by the condition of pregnancy for both the woman and her partner.

Sometimes women feel more feminine in pregnancy and therefore more sexual beings while they are pregnant. Men may be more aroused by the new voluptuousness of their partner. Alternatively, either party may experience an involuntary feelings that sex is somehow not appropriate to be involved in sexual activity at such a time.

With such varied responses and feelings to sex that can abound, the time of pregnancy is a crucial time for women and their partners to be as informed as possible and, crucially, to communicate with each other.

Other factors that can play a part in affecting the sex lives of a woman and her partner during pregnancy are:

Spontaneity. No need now for contraception when having sex for those sure of their own and their partners sexual health.

No more periods for a time. This can feel like such a new freedom for many women.

Fatigue. In the first trimester especially, exhaustion can mean that sex is the last thing on a womans mind.

Impracticality. The size of the bump by the third trimester may present some difficulties. More on this below.

    Sexual Positions in Pregnancy

Sexual activity can continue throughout pregnancy, though practical measures will probably have to be taken with regard to sexual positions. The missionary position will become increasingly impractical around the time of the second trimester. Some women also experience nausea when lying on their backs. Viable alternatives include:

Woman on top. This gives the woman more control over the amount of penetration as well as keeping the weight off the abdomen.

Sitting position. A slight variation on the above perhaps with the man sitting in a serviceable chair.

Spoons position. This again keeps the mans weight off the abdomen and also is a precautionary position, in that only quite shallow penetration is possible. This is a situation some women find preferable as pregnancy progresses.

Rear entry. It may be advisable to exercise care with rear entry positions as they enable deep penetration.

Experiment to find the most comfortable position for you. Such experimentation may in itself bring an extra dimension to you and your partners physical relationship.

    Alternatives to Intercourse in Pregnancy

An inability to work around the bump or discomfort issues may rule out penetrative sex for a period of the pregnancy. This does not necessarily, however, mean an end to all sexual activity. Gentle oral sex and mutual masturbation should not pose any problems while a woman is pregnant. Massage can be most stimulating for either partner. Seek advice first if considering using any aromatherapy oil.

Seven Questions You Might Have About Pregnancy

Everyone has questions about the joys of pregnancy, from morning sickness to weight gain. But many times, they arent asking these questions before becoming pregnant, leading to times of confusion, doubt, and uncertainty. To avoid this, here are seven of the most often asked questions and their answers.

    Will giving birth hurt?

This is a common question among new mothers. And its one that is understandable. Without any frame of reference for birth, its hard to determine if you can do it and survive the pain. Giving birth can be painful for some women, but for others, its not. Some of this depends on the method of birth an epidural tends to numb the pain and help to make it manageable, while natural birth relies on the mother breathing through pain to make it more comfortable. A lot of this question can be answered by your health, your ability to tolerate pain, and your ability to focus on the fact that youre bring a child into the world and thats worth a little discomfort.

How will I know if my baby is healthy?

Problems during pregnancy are a big fear of women. The good news is that with the advances in medicine, there are few problems that cant be prevented or detected and treated anymore. In the beginning, symptoms like morning sickness, fatigue, and mood swings are actually good signs. These mean that your hormones are changing and helping the baby to grow. Of course, you dont have to have these symptoms either. If you take care of your body and regularly visit your doctor, alerting him or her to any pain or spotting, you can rest assured that your baby is probably fine. But if you feel that something is wrong, be sure to call your doctor.

How can I avoid gaining too much weight?

You need to gain about 25 to 35 pounds during the course of your pregnancy, depending on your weight beforehand. Those women that are underweight need to gain more, while those that are overweight will not. To keep from gaining too much weight, but still gaining enough to nourish your new baby, try to only increase your daily caloric intake by about 300 calories. Couple that increase with regular exercise and the baby weight that you gain will not be difficult to lose.

Can I drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages?

There is still a lot of debate about this question. Some doctors feel that a cup or two of coffee or soda will not do any damage to the fetus, while others are still skeptical. The best advice is to speak with your personal doctor to see what he or she thinks. When you have a higher blood pressure, they may suggest avoiding it completely, but a sip here and there seems to be safe.

Can I use a seat belt?

You want to use a seat belt when youre pregnant to protect you and your baby, though you will want to check with your obstetrician as to how this should be placed on your abdomen. What you need to realize is that it is not going to harm the fetus when worn in an appropriate manner and being safe is your utmost concern right now.

    How should I be sleeping?

Most women find that sleeping on their backs or sides is the most comfortable position during pregnancy and your comfort will increasingly become important as you grow larger. Sleeping on your stomach isnt recommended because of the pressure on the womb, but its not really something that will seem all that great once your belly is nice and round.

When should I go on maternity leave?

When youre having your first baby, its always best to expect that you may deliver earlier than you think. Some women find that they can work right up to their date of delivery, while others can not move around as well and need to leave work much earlier this is really up to you. If you feel healthy and energetic, there may be no reason to stay home. Most women find that they will start their maternity leave about two weeks before the delivery date, but again, this isnt for everyone.

    The Sleepless Challenge

For me, it was welcome to motherhood. Ready or not, I was in for a wonderful experience. But my first challenge was to overcome the first few months of literally no sleep. It was my first baby, and I felt the pressure of doing everything just right. I wanted to be a perfect mom. But I quickly learned that parenting was going to be a lifelong journey and that I would make plenty of mistakes along the way.

After stumbling out of bed frequently for middle of the night feedings Id wake up around 6 a.m. to my newborn crying a joyful solo for yet another feeding. After about three weeks of this, and then another month I was completely worn out! Following a cesarean section, I immediately thought I could be Supermom, Grand Interior Decorator, and the House Cleaning Company all at once, and of course I thought I could simultaneously juggle the responsibilities of a baby that I was so certain would sleep through most of the day and night.

After a few restless nights, and having noticed that my sweet infant was rarely sleeping at all, be it night or day, I began to really wonder about her. Was this going to be the norm? Did infants really stay awake for hours at a time demanding a feeding every hour and half? Was I doing something wrong? I couldnt help but wonder if this pattern would ever end. Id read all the many parenting articles that tell you when your infant should stop waking up so frequently and begin sleeping peacefully through the night. Well, I dare say that my little one kept waking up again and again for nights on end. After a few months I began to think I was the only mother out there suffering from severe sleep deprivation! Of course, I knew that I wasnt REALLY the only one, but it sure hits home when it happens to you.

My young one is now an active toddler, and things have definitely improved as far as her sleeping habits go, but I learned quite a few things during those seemingly never ending nights of sleeplessness and days of extreme fatigue. If I had to do it all over again, I definitely wouldnt have tried to be the Grand Interior Designer and the House Cleaning Company (and following a c-section at that)! Here are some handy tips that I should have used and will keep in mind when I have my next baby:

Rest, rest, rest! Okay, it sounds trite, and while pregnant youve probably heard everyone in the world tell you to rest, but once youve given birth its even more important that you still adhere to the resting phase the first few days you are home from the hospital. I cant even begin to explain how much rest is needed after a cesarean sectionbut in either type of delivery, your body needs time to recuperate, so take it easy. What does resting mean? It could mean using paper plates so there are fewer dishes to wash. It could mean having a friend or relative come sit with you a few hours a day and help you around the house (which is especially helpful if you have other younger children). And if you have older children, it could mean having them help out with more chores around the house. Most of all, it means to just let some things go. The dusting doesnt have to be done right awayperhaps it can wait a few more days, or weeks even.

People say to sleep while the baby is sleeping. Well, that didnt work for me, mostly because I was attempting to get things done around the house that I couldnt do efficiently when my daughter was awake. So heres what I say: REST while the baby is sleeping. Sit down, take a break. Schedule that time, and give yourself at least 30 minutes to do absolutely nothing.

Thicken babys milk. I breastfed my daughter for several months. In the beginning nurses were telling me that breastfed babies need to get fed more often because breast milk apparently goes right through their systems. After my daughter was a few weeks old they gave me the go-ahead on thickening her breast milk with rice cereal (about a teaspoon full). It did wonders for her nightly waking ritual. Instead of waking up every hour and half she slept about two hours longer than usual. I say thats good for mom and baby! Of course, check with your pediatrician first, and again, there are differing views on thickening babys milk, so do (or dont do) what you feel is best.

Breastfeeding mothers take a break. For mothers who nurse, I highly recommend pumping so the baby can be given a bottle by other members of the family while you rest up. Breastfeeding is a demanding job and takes quite a bit of energy reserves. Did you know you burn approximately 500 calories during one nursing session? Thats equivalent to the amount of calories I burned on the treadmill a few days ago. So theres another reason for you to take a breather.

Take your prenatal vitamins. Keep taking these. Youll need them, especially during this time of recovery. Your body needs all the minerals and vitamins necessary to boost your immune system and promote overall health. Youll be glad you took them daily.

Continue to eat for two. If you are nursing, this is an especially important concept, since youll need to eat enough to keep your milk reserves flowing. Its very easy for postpartum women to want to begin dieting right after giving birth. However, the healthiest choice is to simply continue the intake of nutritious foods, and to eat enough to keep your energy levels up, because you will definitely need energy in the wee hours of the morning! In addition, doctors recommend that postpartum, nursing women intake anywhere from 2000-2400 calories per day. So eat, and eat healthy.

Keep others in your life. Dont ever feel alone or isolated. If you dont have relatives nearby who can help, seek for help within your community: churches, civic groups and non profit organizations, as well as friends. In addition, there are a host of online communities and discussion groups specifically geared toward pregnancy and parenting issues that are helpful for new moms.

Most of all, do the things you like to do most: read, meditate, write, and work on crafts. Do something you truly enjoy every day for as much as you can. With time, your baby will start sleeping through the night, and one day you will realize that you can finally catch your zs.

    Pregnancy Signs and Symptoms

You think you might be pregnant and the first thing you want to know is what are the sings and symptoms of pregnancy. I know I sure did. Even with home pregnancy tests being so cheap now days I still didn\’t want to shell out the money until I really thought I was pregnant. Of course it didn\’t help that when I first started suspecting that I was pregnant was before those home pregnancy tests would even pick up the pregnancy.

So, what are the signs and symptoms of pregnancy and how early can you really tell if you\’re pregnant or not.

    1. Swollen tender breast - caused by increasing hormones. This normally diminishes after the 1st trimester as your body adjusts to the hormonal changes.
    2. Fatigue that has been described by some as exhaustion. No one knows for sure why you become so fatigued.
    3. Implantation bleeding - normally appears around 11-12 days after conception. It is thought to be the fertilized egg implanting into the uterine wall. This bleeding should be very light.
    4. Nausea and vomiting also called morning sickness. I don\’t know where that name came from but so called morning sickness can last all the time.
    5. Abdominal bloating - Very similar to what you may feel while you are premenstrual.
    6. Frequent urination - no one knows for sure why the need to urinate increases this early in pregnancy. It is thought to be because blood flow increases to that region of the body as well as blood volume in general.
    7. Missed period - At this point most home pregnancy tests can detect sufficient hormonal levels to give a definitive answer.

As you can see many of these symptoms mimic what many women feel just before their periods begin every month. Most symptoms do not show up until around the time that you would miss a period. That\’s why if you suspect that you\’re pregnant is really is best to wait until a pregnancy test can detect the hormonal levels. Some home pregnancy tests are now able to detect the hormone levels even before you miss a period.
